Mülheim Water Award presented for the seventh time

The Mülheim Water Award was presented for the seventh time on Wednesday, 16th September 2020. The prize was awarded for an innovative new method for the fast detection of bacteria (E. coli) in drinking water. Dr. Franz-Josef Schulte, Managing Director of RWW Rheinisch-Westfälische Wasserwerksgesellschaft mbH, presented the award, which is endowed with 10,000 € and is sponsored by RWW and GERSTEL GmbH & Co. KG, both from Mülheim an der Ruhr. The award winners were honoured during the 4. Mülheimer Wasseranalytisches Seminar (MWAS 2020) in the town hall of Mülheim.

In his laudation, Schulte referred to the special significance of water management on site: “Over decades, modern and innovative water management companies have settled, established and networked with each other in and around Mülheim. Those utilities, providers of analytical systems and research institutes have defined developments far beyond the city and the region. This is one of the reasons why we presented the Mülheim Water Award here.

The project was carried out by a team of scientists from the KWR Water Research Institute and specialists from four other Dutch drinking water laboratories. Representing the team, Leo Heijnen from KWR, Liesbeth Visser from Aqualab-Zuid and Rik de Vries from the WLN Water Laboratory accepted the prize.

Interested applicants from Europe had the possibility to apply from 1 December 2019 to 29 February 2020 in a two-tier-selection procedure. This year’s overall topic was: “Innovations for a sustainable, safe and secure drinking water supply”.

The award is given to projects for practice-oriented research and development and the implementation of innovative concepts in the field of drinking water supply and water analysis.

The Mülheim Water Award was first granted in 2006. In five competition rounds, more than 150 applications from 25 different European countries were submitted, covering the entire range of water management topics. The next award will be presented in 2022. Applications most likely can be submitted from December 2021 onwards.
