Participation of IWW at the Green Capital Event 2017 – Bathing in the City 7- 8 September 2017

EWA Event: Under the auspices of the European Green Capital Award by the EU

Under the motto of the Green Capital of Europe, the European Water Association (EWA), in cooperation with the German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste (DWA) is organizing a conference on the topic of “Bathing in the City” – discussing the quality of bathing water in Europe.
The latest EEA report from 2016 confirms that bathing waters in Europe are of high quality, with 95 % of these sites meeting minimum water quality standards set out in EU legislation.
Bathing water policy is one of the success stories in EU water policy and important to protect human health and the environment. Since the 1970s, the EU has had rules in place to safeguard public health and clean bathing waters. It requires Members States to monitor and assess the bathing water. In addition, they must inform the public about bathing water quality and beach management. The Bathing Water Directive also complements other environmental policy:

  • The Water Framework Directive (WFD) under which bathing waters are one of the Protected Areas
  • The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), in contributing to reaching “good environmental status” by 2020.

The conference will give overview of the requirements and recommendations of the European Commission regarding the status of bathing water. It will also give examples of best practice.

IWW will participate in this international event with a presentation of Dr. Wolf Merkel: “River Bathing in the Ruhr – a long road to success”.
