Research

IWW has a focus on interdisciplinary water research. In cooperation with institutes of the University of Duisburg-Essen, the Technical Universities TU Darmstadt and TU Dortmund, our scope ranges from fundamental research to the development of practical applications.

IWW carries out research projects funded by public authorities, in cooperation with and co-funded by public utilities or industrial partners, or as contract research for individual companies.

Research Areas 2012 – 2016

Water research is more and more interlinked at national and international level. IWW is part of a global network of scientific institutions, industrial R&D centres, technology companies, standardisation bodies, organisations and authorities:

  • ARC – Aqua Research Collaboration
  • NORMAN – Network of Reference Laboratories for Monitoring of Emerging Environmental Pollutants
  • WssTP – Water Supply and Sanitation Technology Platform
  • Questor – Centre

A selection from our current research portfolio:

  • Water quality in the Three Gorges Reservoir, China
  • Climate change adaptation (BMBF dynaklim, EU PREPARED)
  • Prognosis of decreasing nitrate reducing capacities in aquifers (DVGW)
  • By-product formation in oxidative treatment of municipal wastewaters
  • Protection of drinking water supply against sabotage and attacks (BMBF STATuS, EU SecurEau)
  • Intelligent Water Networks (BMBF IWaNet)
  • Transitions to the Urban Water Services of Tomorrow (EU TRUST)
  • Hygiene in drinking water installations (BMBF)
  • Aging of pipe materials in drinking water supply (DVGW)
  • Demonstrate eco-system services enabling innovation in the Water Sector (EU DESSIN)
  • Demonstrating Managed Aquifer Recharge as a Solution to Water Scarcity and Drought (EU MARSOL)
